Australian Race Tracks

Australian thoroughbred racing is run across more than 350 active venues, organised into three industry tiers. Metropolitan tracks like Flemington, Randwick, Caulfield, Eagle Farm, Morphettville and Ascot host the Group 1 carnivals and majority of the country's elite Saturday racing. Provincial tracks like Newcastle, Geelong and the Gold Coast bridge midweek and weekend metropolitan-class meetings, while country tracks serve regional racing communities from Scone to Mount Isa.

Direction of racing follows state convention: venues in NSW and Queensland race clockwise; tracks in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and ACT race anticlockwise. Surfaces are predominantly turf, with synthetic Polytrack at the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Pakenham, and Tapeta at Devonport providing year-round all-weather racing.
