Punters, have a go at this. The market's got it wrong at Cairns today and I'm about to tell you why. Vouchers is the raging favourite in Race 4, the TLG Haulage Benchmark 55 over 1400 metres, and I reckon it's one of the worst bets you could make all day. I'm laying this thing with both hands and I don't care who knows it.
Speed War Spells Doom For The Favourite
Here's the story, folks. Vouchers wants to lead. That's its go. Sean Cormack will bounce it out from barrier three and try to control this race from the front. Beautiful plan, except for one little problem: seven other horses in this field want to do the exact same thing.
I tell you what, when you've got eight runners all wanting to be on the pace, something's gotta give. The Honey Badger, Looming One, Merry Old Soul, Miss Shu, Mississippi Dream, The Cops, Lucky Jim. They're all going to be scrapping for the lead alongside our favourite. That's not a race, punters, that's a demolition derby.
Vouchers has won its last two, fair enough. But look closer. That last win was at Cairns in a field of seven on a Heavy track. Before that, a maiden win at Townsville. This horse hasn't proven it can handle a proper speed war against quality opposition. Most recent start? Ran second to Rhegion over this trip when things got serious. That tells you everything.
With only 13 days between runs and a guaranteed hot tempo, this favourite's going to cook itself by the 800 metre mark. By the time they straighten up, Vouchers will be crying out for mercy while something that's been tucked away comes sailing past. I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends.
The Verdict
Look, I'm not saying Vouchers can't win. Any horse can win on its day. But at those odds in that speed setup? You'd be kicking dead backing it. The market's looked at two wins and gone silly. They haven't looked at the pace map. They haven't thought about what happens when eight horses try to lead over 1400 metres. I have, and I'm laying this thing all day long. How good is racing when you can find value like this. Let's go.
